Bisi Bele Bath

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

Growing up, South Indian dishes like Bisi Bele Bath were a staple in our house. As I got older, I started craving more of my mom’s cooking, but it wasn’t as accessible while living several states away. Now I have my mom teach me more of her recipes whenever she visits, and it is my favorite way to spend time together. This recipe is one that I learned a few visits ago, and using the InstantPot means that it cuts the cook time in half! I can have dinner ready to go in just 30 minutes, with leftovers for days – in case you didn’t know, Indian food gets better over time! Give this a try and let me know what you think!

Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp oil
  • 1 tbsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tbsp cumin
  • 1/4 cup curry leaves
  • Pinch asafetida
  • 1 cup toor dal
  • 3/4 cup basmati rice
  • 1 cup tomato puree
  • 5 tbsp sambar powder
  • 1/2 cup fresh or desiccated coconut

  • Add in the vegetables and sauté for 5 minutes.
  • Add the washed dal and rice
  • Add the blended masala and 6 cups of water.
  • Lock the lid in place and pressure cook for 7 minutes.
  • Allow the pressure to naturally release for 20 minutes before releasing the valve.
  • Mix in ghee and serve with raita. Enjoy!
